    From Science to Practice – Relationships Matter: Prenatal and Caregiver Factors

    The fourth annual ECMH WCW event highlighted prenatal caregiver factors such as mental illness and substance abuse, and perinatal impact resulting from abuse, neglect, trauma, genetic or congenital abnormalities, acquired medical problems, developmental problems, and difficulties related to family stress. Sessions were designed to increase the learning for parents, caregivers, trainees and professional attendees.

    There were 571 individuals in attendance over two days, all within the target audience of individuals who provide support, assessment, treatment, and education to children between the ages of 0-5.The audience included local, county, and state providers mostly from Southern California.

    Distinguished Keynote Speakers

    Ira Chasnoff, MD – An award-winning author, researcher and lecturer, is President of the Children’s Research Triangle and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Illinois, College of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Chasnoff has authored seven books, the most recent of which, The Mystery of Risk, explores the biological and environmental factors that impact the ultimate development of alcohol- and drug-exposed children and presents practical strategies for helping children reach their full potential at home and in the classroom.

    Christina Chambers, PhD, MPH – Professor at UC San Diego in the Departments of Pediatrics and Family and Preventive Medicine and also serves as Co-director of the Center for Promotion of Maternal Health and Infant Development.  Dr. Chambers is the Primary Investigator of the largest study of child and human health ever conducted in the United States.

    Kathryn Hirst, MD – Founder of the UC San Diego Maternal Mental Health Clinic which provides mental health care to women who are pregnant or postpartum.

    Gretchen Mallios, LCSW – In private practice as well as serving as the Education Chair for the San  Diego Postpartum Health Alliance, an organization whose mission is to raise awareness about Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders and increase the capacity of service providers to respond to these issues sensitively and effectively.
